Hey,
I have a Dynalink RTA770 modem/router connected to my computer. Recently some applications that use the internet and some internet sites have not been working, one of these include microsoft.com and the online support section. I have consulted my troubleshooters and techinical support with no result.I have run the 'network configuration and automated networking tests' in the windows help and support centre and it is telling me that the IP address of my computer, when pinged, is sending a 'request time out'
Please help me as I have run out of ideas and am short of calling in a technician to have a look.
Let me know if more details are needed.

"Request time out" isn't the problem, because in most router setups, you can disable reply to ping from the internet.
Are you able to get any other website?
If so, check you pc for viruses.
Maybe there is some spyware or dialer, that captures the traffic to the internet and switches you to another website, which is possiby no longer available.

Yes I am able to get to other websites, and no i don't think that i have a virus on my computer as i have recently reformatted. I also run norton internet security 2005, spybot s&d and adware se personal. I have microsoft antispyware, but i am unable to download the most recent definitions because of this problem.
What do you mean "you can disable reply to ping from the internet"?

In the routers setup configuration, mostly
http://192.168.0.1
or
http://192.168.1.1
you can configure your router.
Most routers has a checkbox for the "Reply to internet ping".
If you disable this checkbox, your router does not answer on an internet ping.
On my router I switches it off.
Some people are pinging an ip range, e.g. 212.111.111.1 to 212.111.111.255 to find active pc to hack them.
So if there is no answer on an ordinary ping it seems like there is no active pc on that ip address.That's all.
By the way, I think you tried to surf to the internet with the IE, right.
Do a favor to yourself and try the same with the Mozilla Firefox. Most websites are working properly with it, except M$ Update site.Try the website, where you have got problems with Firefox and see, what happens.
Let me know whether it works or not.
Then we possibly have to try some other things.Let's see ...

Just my luck, i thought i would hook up the standard modem that came when i subscribed and guess what!? the internets working! i updated alll the 34 updates microsoft said were of high priority, thought that might do something for my router, but nope.
I knew that i could access my router through entering the ip address in the internet browser, but there is no such option as the one we are talking about...
Concluding, there must be something wrong with my router...i'm going to call the companies tech support and see wat they can do.
I'm not that interested in using mozilla

Ok, I recommended Mozilla for testing, because I wonder, why you are able to go to some websites and got problems to some others.
Some spyware or dialer a.s.o., only work on internet explorer.
And to figure out, where the problem is, I suggested to try this with Mozilla.
There is another way to figure out, whether it is generally possible to connect to that web servers, you got problems with.
You can simply open a dos box and use telnet, to connect to that servers.
E.g.:
If you want to connect to www.microsoft.com, try the following in dos box:
telnet www.microsoft.com 80If it works, you should see only a blank black screen. You can leaf it by typing quit and pressing enter.
If it worked, there is maybe a redirection to a completely other web server in IE.
And you know, there are many many registry keys for the IE, where spyware can redirect your browser requests to another server.That's why I told you, test the same with Mozilla. It's just for testing!
Mozilla doesn't use this registry keys, I talked about.
And by the way, Mozilla is more secure, but it's your decision.
