Intermittent wan connection

March 1, 2010 at 10:02:45
Specs: Windows XP
Windows XP sp3, recently scanned for malware and virus. Use symantec corp edt. for virus protection for small (10pc) network. All pc's on the network operate fine except this one. Ping lan, all is well. Cannot ping wan when having problems. After reboot will have WAN connection for aprox 20 min. then nothing. Have tried: uninstalling symantec, disable firewall, checked sonic router no rules to block any lan--> wan activity. plugged cpu into new/different ports (one's that work) Uninstalled "network connections" reinstalled, verified parameters are the same as working PC. Any clue where to look/what to do?
Oh, sorry zero wireless on this network, all cat 5 connections.

Three things stand out with the nonworking pc

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 199.2.252.10
63.165.32.2

wrong dns server which should be 207.247.9.10
no physical [mac] address - indicates a problem with the nic or its bindings
static ip instead of dhcp - why?

I allowed windows to auto select the above parameters previously while troubleshooting. I then went to another machine that works(98) and copied the parameters, I got about20 min of conectivity. This morning I reset the parameters allowing windows to select and here's the results, rebooted the machine and shut it down no contectivity at all now. Still no physical address. I apologize but I'm not that savvy to know why or how to fix that. I'll do some searching today to see if I can figure out. Any advice? Thanks

first see if there is an updated driver for the SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

I have seen this problem on the net conncerning no valid mac address but have never seen identified the problem or how to fix it short of replacing the nic.

You may wish to try going into the nics properties /advanced and selecting "locally administered" address and makeup a mac address in hex format [0-9, A-F]
