I'm trying to troubleshoot my sister-in-law's computer. She gets Internet access through Verizon DSL and Linksys WRT54G wireless router. She has a wired connection for her PC and a wireless connection for her laptop.

Internet access had been working fine. All of a sudden it's not. She can access a few sites ok (very few) but most sites she cannot access. In Firefox she gets "Waiting for server..." or "transferring data from...". She has same problem in IE. When I connected her PC to my cable modem and router Internet access worked fine. So, it seems like it would be a router problem--some sites go through but most don't.

I've tried releasing and renewing the IP address, powering off the dsl modem and router, and reinstalling the network card in XP. I've looked at the IP config and router config and they seem ok.

I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any idea why she can access some sites but not (most) others?

Thanks in advance.

Normally with something like this the network is hosed up. Try pinging the sites that work and see if there are any bad hops - high packet loss or latency - along the way. Could just be a router going bad along the path and it needs to be reset or replaced.

Hold the phone! Did this just start happening with in the past couple weeks? I started having the same identical problem. I don't use a router, I just use Verizons westell 2200 and the same exact isssues. Spent about 2 hours on the phone with verizon tech support. The only thing that came out of the conversation was that it was not on my end and he couldn't confirm if it was them or not. We knew it wasn't me when I tried having the dsl modem update its firmware automatically. That would have been great if it wasn't for the fact that I could not connect to www.westell.com, but the phone tech could.

If you check the verizon dsl system status, there has been a lot of activity lately. I think they are having an issue that they are dealing with and not admitting to. Its either that or these westell dsl modems fry after a while, how long has she had verizon dsl, I have for about a year now.
