intel pro/1000mt network adaptor not communicating w/ router

Specs: Windows XP
I have a dell optiplex gx270 desktop that can't detect netgear router. I am connected through a wire cable and have the driver for intel pro/1000mt network adaptor. It shows on the right bottom corner that I have the internet connection but I don't have IP address. I tried restarting computer and router to no avail. I have other computers at home to download drivers. So I visited dell and intel to diagnose and dowload driver for the intel ethernet adaptor but still can't get no internet connection. Can someone please help? I am running Windows XP Pro.

No IP address at all. And yes I do have automatic detection set on my interface. I just can't figure it out. I have a working cable running from the computer to the router. It's telling me that I do have a connection. But I still can't open any websites.
The tech. support at Time Warner told me to download and update the driver for Intel pro/1000 MT ethernet adaptor and I did. ????

If that doesn't help then posting the output of IPCONFIG here might enable us to spot the problem.
