Hi everyone, does anyone have any advice for improving the connectivity of a wireless network? I have a home LAN. Several of the workstations connect to the LAN using wireless network adapters. The OS's on these workstations are either XP Pro Sp2 or Vista Business. My wireless access point is a Linksys WRT54G (capable of 54Mbps). All of the workstations are in fairly close proximity to the wireless access point with no heavy doors etc to get in the way of the signal. I have two problems (1)the signal strength seems to have a mind of its own. It varies from excellent most of the time to occasionally low even though nothing has changed that might block the signal. (2)the connection periodically drops out on my workstations even when the signal strength is supposedly 'Excellent'. This drop out occurs at least once a day and can usually be fixed by using the 'repair connection' function. However occasionally the connection can not be repaired even by rebooting and you just have to wait before you can connect again. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me that you are getting interference from a cordless phone or another wireless network. Go into the router configuration utility and change the channel that your router puts it's signal on. For more information on improving wireless network performance see the following page:

Hi Bill, one of the workstations in particular is sitting right next to a cordless phone so I believe your diagnosis is correct. I have changed the signal frequency of the wireless access point from 11-2.462GHz to 1-2.412GHz. I will post again to update whether the problem has gone away. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hi Bill, I followed the guidelines posted on your website but ran into a few difficulties. The first thing I did was move the cordless phone as far from the workstations as I could (a distance of approx 3-4 meters away). I then attempted to change the signal frequency of the wireless access point but found that I could only get a decent connection on the frequency I was already using. I got the following results
1-2.412 To slow to use
2-2.417 To slow to use
3-2.422 To slow to use
4-2.427 No connection
5-2.432 No connection
6-2.437 To slow to use
7-2.442 No connection
8-2.447 No connection
9-2.452 No connection
10-2.457 No connection
11-2.462 Good connection (already in use)
12-2.467 No connection
13-2.472 No connection
The problem is still occurring although possibly less after moving the phone (it's quite intermittent so it's hard to say for sure). Would buying a signal booster help combat interference? Or do you think the only way to solve the problem is to get rid of one of the conflicting devices?

To anyone that's interested I have solved this problem by forking out for a wireless range extender. I purchased a Linksys WRE54G to go with my WRT54G router/wireless access point. The connection seems to have stopped dropping in and out now that this device has been installed. There doesn't seem to be a silver bullet for intermittent wireless connectivity. If your connection is dropping out you either need to relay the signal using a range extender or go closer to the signal source (even if Windows is telling you your connection is 'Very Good').
