Hi,
I have finished setting up my home web server using IIS. I am able to browse my homepage via the //localhost/ URL, both on IE & Firefox. I have a dynamic IP, with a dyndns hostname.
However, i am unable to browse to my page from outside my LAN, although if i ping(or nslookup) my dyndns host, i get my routers ADSL IP just fine.

Wy is my site NOT browseable from outside?

PS. My router has been setup to forward outside port 8080 to port 80 to avoid ISP blocking of port 80.

Plz advise...& thanks ;-)

Are you including the port number in the URL? I.e. http://your_dyndns_domain.com:8080

I have. The prob i find is that when i browse to my URL (provided by DynDns.org) i get dialog to login in to my router, requestin guser, pass. Is that coz im within the network? Or is that a sign of what im doing wrong. Instead of displaying my site as instructed on IIS, it returns a router login box.

I have setup port forwarding on the router for outside 8080, inside 80, TCP. IIS is using port 80. This looks correct right?

Any ideaS?

Check the settings in your router for remote management. It sounds as if your router is set to receive incomming remote connections on port 8080.

My D-Link router has the settings under Tools/Admin and there are 4 default ports to use for remote management 80, 88, 1080 & 8080.

Ok, i removed my router and plugged in with my ADSL modem. It now works fine. So its obviuously something to do with my router.

I now have another slight issue: When i make changes to my website, they are not showing when i browse to my dyndns.org site. The old file remains without the changes i make to the HTML file in question. Any ideas?

That would be the cache in your browser. You can override this by pressing CTRL-F5. Or you can change how pages are cached altogether. In IE go to Tools<Internet Option. On the General tab click the Settings button. Then change the value for "Check for newer versions of stored pages".

Hi MJ, thanks for all the help. I still cannot get my router to allow connections straight to me IIS web server. If you browse to my URL, it still brings up the router login box as if i were trying to acces the router rather than the web server. My router has 2 NAT options:
1-Virtual Servers.
2-Port Triggering.

I have added port 80 to point to inside port 80 and to the IP of my PC. Still nothing. Would it matter that i have DHCP on my LAN. My PC always gets the same IP, but perhaps this a web server setup requires a static? Though that wouldn't make sense coz it wokred fine using a standard ADSL modem.....I'm getting lost now......Plz hlp......

thanks

Try turning off remote management within your router. There's usually very little reason to administrate your router outside your internal network.

You shouldn't need to do anything under OPort triggering, just Virtual Server. DHCP doesn't matter as long as the IP you are forwarding to is the right one for the server. My router lets me set the IP for computers while using DHCP so I don't have to worry about that, but if you don't have that option, just set your PC with a static IP if you wish. Again this is not necessary as long as the IP you are forwarding to is the correct one.

Ok, now the weirdest thing has happened.

I connected my laptop (the one running the web server)at work using a modem. I can see the web site fine using another PC at work thats on a different LAN. I could even log into my laptop via Remote Desktop.

I then left the laptop running and online in the office and got home. At home, i used another laptop (different internal IP) and tried to Remote desktop or browse to my laptop at work. It no longer worked. Instead, i once again get my Router's login box, requesting Login/password.

I'm confused coz my DynDNS updater is running on my laptop, so as far as that's concerened, 'myhost.dyndns.org' should still have been pointing to the laptop i left behind at work running the web server on IIS.

Any ideas?

No. But there is obviously some setting or such that you are overlooking. There is no way that using the DynDNS address would bring up your router's login if it is correctly configured on a computer not within your network. What do you get when you ping the DynDNS address?
