I am currently running a peer to peer network (nic to nic) and my xp(host) and win98se(client) can access the internet, file and print share etc...
I installed iis 5.0 on xp pro...when i call the host computer from a browser( http://computername), i the message badgateway found...
I ping my host computername and the ip that comes back is 192.168.0.1 with all replies...

Sounds like you have a configuration problem. First I would try connecting to the IP address via a browser. That will tell you the system and www service is operating.
Ping tells you the IP is configured and responding however, one of the machine will need to handle the browse master role for your internal network. Make sure the XP machine does not have the braowse master role disabled.
