IE won't load webpages

My buddy has asked me to look at his pc. He has xp and cable internet. The problem is that the when he uses IE he can check his email but it won't take him to other sites. I was just wondering if anybody had any preliminary ideas of things I should look for before I go over later this week. (I know not much info. but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, hoping something simple.)
