Posted on W2K but maybe this network Problem

so far
Not quite so simple, I have Netgear modem/router connected to broadband, off that i have 3 machines, 1 fixed 2 laptop. 2 work fine but one laptop won't connect to internet unless i VPN thru to my company network and then it OK, even if i shut VPN link it continues to work but any new IE sessions wont work. IE setting same on all computers I have nothing set in LAN setting or Dialup settings, have tried all combinations of auto detect etc.
IE v6.0.2800.1106 again same on all machines

reply
Start by trying to ping the router.
also do a " IPCONFIG /all" (command prompt window)
that will give your the current settings of your network connections.
You should (actually MUST) have valid entries in the following
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DHCP server
DNS Server (2 entries)

any of those that are missing, or has all 0's
(such as 0.0.0.0) then your laptop is not receiving the correct ip settings from the Netgear.

Also try running the internet connection wizard. (in IE tools/internet options/connections/setup)
Chose "I want to setup my connection manually or through a LAN" next is "connect through a local area network" then be sure on the next screen that ALL OPTIONS are unchecked. Default is sometimes to have the "automatic discovery of proxy server" checked. if it is, uncheck it.
It's also possible that you may need to check your configuration options in the Netgear router.

my reply
I can ping the router Ok.
Tried doing the IE setup no difference.
IPCONFIG/all results all had valid entries.
Only difference between laptop that works and one that doesn't

Working One
Primary DNS Suffix : xxx.com
Connection Specific DNS Suffix :

Not Working
Primary DNS Suffix :
Connection Specific DNS Suffix : xxx.com

rest all same, could this be problem and if so how do i reset these?

Start>Control Panel>Network Connections
Right click on LAN connection and select properties. Scroll down menu to TCP/IP and highlight this item. select properties. You can edit the settings manually.

If your laptop is getting IP do have static or dymatic. If dymatic a getting it from your router Then try ping the internal ip number of the router if not. I suppect it not getting a ip from your router. If ok then try ping the external ip of the router, next try ping the dns ip, and finally ping www.yahoo.ca,

If static make sure your same subnesk mask and gateway and have the same dns as the laptop that works.

I suppect on the informatation you gave is that there no dns, but follow the ping excrice and let me know at what point it fails

What happens if you enter ip address in IE address bar, e.g. http://216.109.127.30/ for Yahoo? If it connects (Yahoo error page) its DNS at fault.

It says opening page 216.109.127.30 but then won't connect and comes back with "The page cannot be displayed"

As you can PING ok, it would seem the gateway setting is fine. I'd suggest rebulding the TCP stack on the problem PC, that is uninstall the network components, reboot and reinstall them for the LAN connection with appropriate settings. Windows networking sometimes gets its female undergarments in a twist after many changes.

I don't know - I'm sorry I won't risk rebuilding mine to see whether you do or not! I'll see if I can find anything relevant via Google.

Had same problem. I have IBM thinkpad, Centrino, built-in wireless, and Linksys router. Before I could connect to Internet with IE without my companies VPN client at home. Now IE will only work with VPN. I was able to ping my router and DNS server etc but still IE wouldn't work. Tried everything and was messing around and now it works. This is what I did. Went to wireless NIC properties, TCP properties, advanced, DNS tab, and clicked button "append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes", "append parent suffixes of the primary DNS" and "register this connections addresses in DNS. Second I did an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew in the CMD prompt window. Third I returned the prior settings to "append these DNS suffixes", unclicked the rest, and added the prior domain suffix that was their before in the window "xxxxxxxx.org" my company's name. I clicked okay and now everything works. Let me know if this works for you.
