I have a dell laptop with an EV-DO aircard for internet access. I've set up an ad-hoc wifi network and set up internet connection sharing. this allows me to connect to the internet with other wifi enable devices through my laptop's 3G connection. everything seemed to be working fine. i've managed to get internet access this way with both a 3G iphone and a netbook.
when i try to use the netbook to connect to my home vpn (or just directly to my home IP) through the adhoc wifi/evdo bridge it just times out. however, i can use the iphone through the adhoc wifi/evdo bridge to connect to my home vpn just fine. additionally, i can use pdanet to share my iphone's 3G connection in a similar manner. and when i do that the netbook connects to the home vpn just fine. finally, using the dell laptop (that has the evdo card) i can connect to my home vpn just fine.
everything is running winxp. except the iphone, naturally.
