The issue:

I can not connect to wireless router anymore.

I can not access 192.168.1.1 via internet

When I ping 192.168.1.1 - it indicates the request has timed out.

I downloaded the software update and unzipped it but dont know what else I need to do.

Help !

To troubleshoot, you connect wired to the router not wireless.

Start there.

Advise you to reset wireless router by pressing reset button at the back of router for 30s-1m while it's powered on, after that reconfigure router by using default username/password.

Linksys
default username:(leave it blank)
password:admin

If you need more helps, take a quick look on this wireless network setup tutorial. Hope it helps.

Actually, before doing anything else, you should try recycling the power. Just unplug it, count a slow 10 and plug it back in. Allow a minute or two for it to finish booting and see if your wireless is working.

If it is, don't do anything else to it and wait and see if it loses it's marbles again. If it does, then update the firmware and even reset it to factory defaults.

If it doesn't work, I'd try the update and reset.

Actually I did all those steps too bit it was a stupid thing I dis
not realize. I needed two Ethernet cables one from modem to
linksys and one from modem to laptop in order to access
192.168.1.1 so I could redo the security settings. but thanks
for the responses !
