I'm not to clear on how to configure hyperterminal to work with my equipment. I've connected to my 2800 cisco router, and I can see it bootup and what not, but then when I want to enter into the CLI nothing happens. My text comes up but nothing happens, i can type a bunch of junk all over the screen but can't enter in any of it. Am I just missing something in properties inorder to send what I type to the router?

Get rid of hyperterm and download TERA TERM off the web . It justs works without a lot of hassle , hyperterm is always problematic attaching to cisco gear . Set it to your serial port and set it as 9600,8,n,1 .

Hyper terminal is designed to communicate with an analogue modem and nothing else. Any attempt to to communicate with a router is doomed to failure.

That is incorrect it can talk to anything that is attached to your serial cable connection , that is how all cisco gear is configured .

And hyperterm talks to managed switches from a number of manufacturers.

Usual problem connecting to a cisco router is you don't have the proper serial cable.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

It's doing the same thing for my dlink switch. I can see the text on bootup but when I want to enter commands into the CLI( a username in this case), my return key is unresponsive. Return just sends my cursor to the next line.

For historical reference one might take note that Cisco's own books say that hyperterm can be used.

I have used it for years both serial and tcp/ip. There is no magic in a simple terminal emulator that precludes it's use on any device that requires any of the few standard terminal sets included in hyperterm.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
