When you're connecting to the console cable, I don't mean this to be an insult, but you are using the correct cable and connecting from a DB-9 Serial to RJ-45 rollover cable and also using hyperterminal settings 9600 8 none and 1?

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

It sounds like whoever configured the pix forgot to save the running config to nvram.
What that means is when you turn it off [or lose power] you lose the configuration.

This usually means you are at factory defaults.

You would connect as buckethead suggests and according to your models documentation.

Usually cisco sends a blue flat cable that you need to use. It is neither a patch nor a crossover cable. They call it a rollover cable.
The console cable is essentially a roll over cable and the pin out are:
1 <-> 8
2 <-> 7
3 <-> 6
4 <-> 5
5 <-> 6
6 <-> 4
7 <-> 3
8 <-> 1

It has only uses for serial communications. If you don't have it you can make it or use rs232 cables that are similar.

Without the correct cable it won't work.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
