I have Cable internet and want to connect 3 to 4 computers without sacrificing too much speed. Would a hub be better than a router or vice versa and could you recomend a decent one 200.00 budget. Thanks

Hub won't help without buying more IP's from your ISP ($). A Router ($100) with 4 ports and a WAN connection are all you need to work with an existing internet connection. Most routers have a 10mb WAN port (which is fine for DSL or Cable) and 4 10/100 ports for the network side.

Use a HUB and download Wingate software. Setup Wingate server on the PC that goes directly to you ISP and Wingate client on all other PC. The hub should be around $69 and Wingate Liecence is ~$25.oo

Actually you can buy a hub, and use one of your PCs for connecting all of the other PCs to the internet. Many Windows Operating Systems now come with ICS (internet connection sharing), so if you have Win XP, Win 2000, Win Me, or Win 98 Second Edition you can run ICS and buy a 4 port hub cheap - about $40 bucks. If you don't want to sacrifice speed buy a switch instead of a hub...about $50 bucks. General price for a Linksys at any Best Buy or Comp USA.

I want to split my cable connection from rodgers to two computers using a hub.
The host computer has windows ME and the other has windows XP. I'm not sure how to connect the cords or if I have to run ICS on the computer with windows ME or if I can just plug it in? Hope that makes sense.
would appreciate the help.Starla

ICS is flaky and the system running it has to be on always. Buying a 10/100mb hub, then buying Wingate still have the same issue as above and it costs the same as the Linksys router.
Use the Linksys Router - same price. Plug and Play 5 minutes - you get Firwall, NAT, DHCP, nothing to configure or install.

I agree with Jose. Buy a Linksys or DLink 4 port router/firewall. You basically plug it in and if your PCs are currently set for DHCP, you just plug them in.
Note that it includes a firewall. You can find them around here for about $85 now. I have a DLink 701 and have seen them on ebay for $40 - $60 recently.

What is the best way to expand a 4 port router if you need to add some cable runs or print server when the 4 ports are all used? Can you cascade anouther router off a router port or do you add a switch?

i have a hub and have 3 pc conected and it was less then $ 60.00 to buy and i have cable internet and pay nothing extra...
i had a router and it was tempermental and always looseing its info
