If you use Win-dos, and chat is not a web-based, you can use netstat command to see IPs to what you are communicate with.

What's wrong with these people (I don't mean specifically this post)?!

They ask pretty technical questions and require detailed answer but they don't give any technical details!

I.E. how are you chatting irc, web-page, ICQ? on what system win95,NT,2000,Linux?

Netstat doesn't give IP of people you are chatting with (except if dcc chat/send is initiated).

To discovers other's IP address, if you are using software such as MIRC, just type the following command in your software:

/whois nameofyourfriend

NOTE: Some irc server hide hostname/IP for security reasons.

if you are chatting w/ someone, drop to a command prompt and type netstat and hit enter, it will list the ip addresses of users chatting/pinging. otherwise. Then type "ip address here" tracert to list to path to them in hops...

If I am using Aol Instant Messenger and someone IM's me, how can i find out their IP address...city/state they are in... and their home address? Also, will it work if I Instant Messsage them? If you can help, please e-mail me at LHP777@juno.com. Plus, I am looking for something free or doesn't cost much. Thanks.

well msn messenger relays your messages through it server, so the messages come through the server,so there is no way of getting the person ur chattin wid's ip.
However,all is not lost, you could ask him to email you,and you could get his ip off that

In mIRC i can see the ip address of the person i am chatting with.. but now how i can use this ip to get all details about this person?

If you already have the IP address from however you got it (in hotmail set your mail display to advanced) then do the following:

Start
Run
command.com
cd\ [enter]
tracert 123.123.123.123 [enter]
(substituting the IP above of course)

OR if you are lazy, go to www.arin.net/whois and type it in. You cannot get a person's address from this. The most you'll get is their service provider and city.
