It's difficult to do becasue of the way that torrents work. The real answer to this sort of problem is to institute a data usage policy in your company. Make it clear that computers are only to be used for company purposes, draw up a written policy to that effect, give a copy to every employee and ask them to sign it, then be prepared to implement it. The ultimate sanction should be that repeat offenders are dismissed.

This is something that has to come from upper management. If you are not in that position you need to draw up a report detailing what this abuse is costing the company and pointing out potential legal problems if copyright material is being illegally used on company computers.. It should be easy enough to convince them of the benefits of such a policy.

There are devices that can be used to block specific applications but they're expensive and I suspect cost more than you really want to spend to stop this.

I would do what ijack says. Institute an "appropriate use policy" at work with regard to how the the work computers and network can be used. Make it clear in the policy use of any point-to-point sharing, or torrent type software is against policy and make an example of the first person you catch by firing them and then check each and every other computer at work the next day and pass around a company wide email stating you are now monitoring for such abuses.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
