How to stop Skype lag.

Specs: Windows Vista
Hello. I have TWC internet, I've never had a problem till 6months ago. I play online video games often and well it was all fine and dandy. My brother use to have a desktop which he skyped 24/7 webcam and all, that didn't bother my gaming till he got a laptop. Now that hes on a laptop and only when using a laptop on wireless it makes my internet go crazy. I played wow and my ping was 110 once he got started in a webcam session it would fly up to 1000+ in ping. PS3 would lag to s---. I'm not exactly sure whats causing the horrible lag, I know the program that does it is Skype webcam when ran on wireless. Some people say they use you as a super nod whoring your net out to others. Others thing is too many incoming connections bottlenecking my router. Is there any way to fix solve this problem?. I lag even when QoS is set. He uses a Windows 7 Laptop.

The simple solution is disable the wireless network off when you want to game. This can easily be done from the router's management interface. It change be re-enabled when you're done in a matter of a minute or two.

Other than that, check and see if he's doing any file sharing at all when online on his laptop. If he is, that will chew up bandwidth like nothing else will. If he's not then it's the combination of the video (another bandwidth hog) and the wireless network.

Wireless REALLY sucks by the way. You pay for the convnenence with an inherent lack of security and susceptibility to lag and latency. If you're connecting wirelessly to game you'll want to change that to a wired connection. If you ARE gaming over your wireless network, changing to wired will probably fix all lag issues you're having even while your brother is online with his laptop.

I play wired cause I know wireless sucks. But no he isn't doing anything besides just being on cam through skype. I've tested it and its only Skype which lags everything. Its completely weird cause I tested it on a 3rd pc wired and it didn't even up my latency. Also under my router theres a bunch of incomming connections and it only pops on when hes on skype. I can run up to 8 devices and it wont make my latency go bad.

Ok, the two biggest bandwidth hogs are (and not necessarily in this order):

1) Up/Downloading
and
2) video

So, if anybody in your network is up/downloading or streaming video it's going to reduce the bandwidth for everyone else and adversely affect your gaming.

Uploading or downloading vids or even streaming has had no effect when I tried it. I did manage to borrow his laptop and use his skype to make a video call to a friend of mines. When video chat was only on my side there was absolutely no lag. Once we both got the cam going my latency spiked to hell so I can confirm its due to skype cam to cam. I have heard sky uses you as a nod so other people can communicate since its P2P and all. That could be it enabling QoS does improve latency. Btw it doesn't just affect gaming it also affects video streaming, browser loading and what not.
