ok i've got a rig that's currently not in use and i'd like to use it as a webserver. the problem is, i know absolutely nothing about how to start one. what things do i need? is it difficult? any guides to help? thanks a lot.

You need to download the software...
There are few good and free ones on the net.
www.apache.org - apache software, this one is good, but you may need to do some configuration
http://www.mywebserver.org/us/ - mywebserver, this one is the best for novice.
All you need is to install the software. Afterward, if you know your either static or dynamic ip, your webpage will be whatever you set to. and the site most likely will be http://123.456.78.90/ and so on.. Of course, if you register your ip (static ip for domain name to resolve it ), then it will be something.com
good luck playing with it... it will be fun!

thanks for the help :) what's static and dynamic? and after downloading the software and configuring everything, i'm done? seems way too easy...

static = fixed... dynamic = can be changed
Yea, after configuring, just run the software, and you are visible outside!
