how to increase signal strength

We just bought a vacation home in Florida at an adult community. We receive a wireless signal in our house from the office on the complex. The signal is not good though and we keep being knocked offline because of poor signal strength. What is my best option for gaining better signal strength for my Dell laptop with internal wireless card?

Your best option would be to disable the internal wireless's card and get a USB Wierless adaptor. You can then get a USB extension cable which will then allow you a bit more freedom as to where to position the USB device, moving it about till you get the best signal. Belkin do a USB adaptor with extension cable.
The only other option is to speak to the host administrator and ask them if they could reposition their antenna, but that might improve your position to the detriment of others.

I should also add that the office we receive the signal from is about 50 yards away and there are trees and some buildings between us and them. Was not sure that would make a difference also. Thanks for your reply. Also, could you please tell me how to edit my original post to add that info to it. I could not figure that one out. Thanks again.

Unfortunately you cannot edit the original post.
50 yards through trees and building might be pushing it a bit, although it is not beyond what is possible.
Beyond adjusting the antennas and possible using a directional antenna, there is not much else you can do.
The actual strength of the signal transmitted is determined by radio transmission regulations and to increase it would bring you into conflict with the radio regulatory authorities like the FCC in the USA
