You do not configure the laptop to use WPA. It is the wireless router you must configure. Go into the router's configuration web page and change encryption type to WPA.

The laptop will automatically know that it's WPA. Just enter the WPA key into the laptop's connection dialog.

The router is set to WPA and it is working on several PCs in my home.
Going into Control Panel-Network Configuration the Wireless Network Connection 2 status is Not connected.

Right clicking on that line and going to Properties; select the Wireless Networks tab and click on the router line properties.
The Data encryption window displays WEP. Clicking on that window arrow for selections gives only WEP or Disabled. WPA is NOT a choice.

Some older laptops only gave the choice of WEP as WPA hasn't been around as long. You could try seeing if there's an updated driver for your network adapter but if there isn't one I'm afraid you are stuck with changing everything to WEP.
