|Floppy drives were never very robust. I would try replacing the drive and see if that doesn't fix it so you can load drivers from a floppy disk.|
All that's required for the two PC's to communicate is a network connection. If both have working NIC's then you can directly connect them using a crossover cable. Or, you could plug both into a switch using regular patch cables.
It goes without saying the TCP/IP settings on both have to be correctly configured to be in the same subnet with the same subnet mask.
