Hmmmm Linux doesnt allocate IP to printers, but you have to tell linux what is the printserver's IP address for each printer setup in the spool.

In /var/spool/lpd/printername you can see setting for each of them.

If you just want the IP address you can Ping it. From a C: prompt in a DOS window type PING XXXXXXX (XXXXXX is the printer name). If it is a W2K server go to printers a right click the printer and go to properties. Then click the ports tab and then the configure port button. The IP address should be there.

If the printers are connectred to a NT network...there will be an IP assigned, usually thru the printers internal NIC card or with a JetDirect box (or similiare device)attached to the printers parallel cord...

If it is an external JetDirect box, hold down the button on top of the JetDirect box about 5-6 seconds and the printer will print out a configuration sheet which will show the MAC address and the IP address...

If it has an internal NIC card, there will be some combination of buttons on the printer that will take you to a menu which you will be able to print the info needed...

It might be a configuration menu, test menu etc...some of the older HP printers for example, you have to drill down several menus deep to find what you need...

Hope this helps
Steve

There's a nice free LAN scanning tool available from:-
http://www.gfi.com/languard/lanscan.htm

It will report on all the devices on the LAN and produce a report in html format.

Also, on the server you could start to install a dummy printer and say it's a networked printer. When it comes to allocating a port/IP address you'll see all the addresses that are currently allocated to printers. Messy, but you can get the info.

hi, pls use JetAdmin utility. just run it from a network workstation. it will search your printer and will display you its mac address and ip address. otherwise, you can get ip address of the printer from printing out its configuration test page. it will print all information about its ip address and other configuration.d

thanx
