how to connect two pcs using switch

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 1.7 GHz / 256 MB
how to connect PC & laptop using asus GX1008B 8port switch?

PC ip address
default gateway

laptop ip address
gate way

i connected modem LAN wire to port1 & PC to port2 & laptop to port 3.

now my problem is when i login to PC then in laptop i could not login,getting authentication can i login both at same time?is router needed for this?

Yes, you need a router. A switch alone will not allow you to share an Internet connection. With just a modem and switch all PCs will be trying to use the same public IP address which is not possible.

A router has a DHCP server will issue private IP address to each computer that will allow the Internet to be shared via Network Address Translation.
