How to connect two computers via DOS?

Hi. I am trying to connect to PCs with NICs each via DOS only. The two PCs are used in a unnatended application (no keyboard, no monitor, they only turn power on with timers at different hours). I understand that I need a crossover cable, but the URLs dedicated to networking only focuses in networking in Windows or Unix. I would like to use simple networking facilities (transfer, copying and deleting files) with two computers that only have MSDOS installed in their hard drives. I am confused about the procedure (packet drivers, protocols, etc.) because I had never do it in the past. Also, I would like to know if it possible for one computer to sense when the other computer has powered on (to stop its batch file processing and retreive the files from the other PC). Since the application is in real time, I would like to know what it is the most simply protocol to use (with least resources used by the PCs). Any information will be truly appreciated. Thanks.
