you need to get a router to share your internet connection, a hub won't do it

Windows internet connection sharing will not work, remember..every workstation need an ip address, if you enable internet connection sharing, how is that going to work assuming there is no router involved?

Not true. You don't need a router. ICS will make the NIC in your ICS host act as a router, performing NAT and as a DHCP server for your ICS host.

I have NOT lost my mind — I have it backed up on tape somewhere

There is an issue with ics that some people don't care for nor can use. If you have one nic card and that computer is required to connect then ICS doesn't help cause it uses a static IP where you ISP requires a public dynamic.
What you could do is get a broadband router/switch, or use a second nic in the first computer to connect to the second.

You could use a program instead of ICS that would allow you to use a single nic like analogx's proxy. You'd have to change the settings all the time, but it would work.

Consider a broadband router or another nic card. I like the router as it can provide a more secure home lan.
