Subject: How to connect to a router?
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 2GHz/512Meg
Comment:

I have just pruchased a Cisco UBR924 Cable modem/router. I have it hooked up and it works fine. I have the capability to connect/telnet into the router as it has the full IOS 12.x installed. I want to connect to it but have no idea how. The qustions I have are the following:

1. can I use the cable and remove from the ethernet port and connect to the console port? (Is this a roll cable?)
2. How does one telnet into a router? I do not know the IP address of the router (Is this my default gateway?)

Any help in connecting to this device would be helpful. Obviously I am a newbie at this.

To telnet into a router.
1. Start telnet by going to Start->Run and typing telnet into the box and clicking OK. A DOS box will come up saying stuff about Microsoft Telnet and stuff.
2. Type open than enter.
3. Input your routers IP address and press enter, default for most routers is 192.168.0.1, it is also your default gateway.
4. If it works, than the router should ask for your login. Check the documentation for your router for this info.
5. Use the router documentation, or their website for more info on which commands do what.

One note is that this should only be done within the LAN.

1. Connect one end of the yellow Ethernet cable into 1 of the 4 yellow Ethernet ports (labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4), on the cable modem's rear panel.

2. Connect the other end of this cable to the Ethernet port on a PC.

I tried to connect by using the telnet example that Chris gave me and the default gateway that when I did an ipconfig, but niether worked. When i do an ipconfig the default gateway is my cable companies 12.x.x.x address. Why is my deault gateway the cable company and not my router?

The reason your Gateway is set to 12.x.x.x is beause you probably had to manually configure it to that when you where not using a router. You will need to change that eventually but first I would think that your IP address would have to be in the same range as that of the Router so you can connect to it, so as long as the router has not been configured before you would have to change your IP to lets say 192.168.0.100 or anything within the range of the router. If you dont know the router IP because it is used or has been configured before you will have to connect via the console port. Hope this helps

use the roll cable(comes with your cisco equip), connect it to com1 or com2 port. Use the hypertrm and select com1 or com2, set the baud rate to 9600, 8, n, 1 and you should be in cisco's >, then type en and enter, you should be in # prompt.(Default cisco equip has no password yet). Do sh runn and it will list the running config.

I bought the router used. It did not come with a cable. Is a roll cable different than Cat5?
