Use a crossover cable
Someone else may pipe up and chime in and say you don't have to use a crossover. While this may be correct since most, if not all modern switches are auto MDIX capable....it's still best to use a crossover cable and there's no real cost difference between a crossover and and a normal 'straight through' patch cable.
I have crossover connecting my Cisco 2900 XL to my SOHO router.
