Since you didn't tell us what make/model extender you have nor did you tell us what make/model base you are trying to extend we have no chance to read your user manual for you.

Usually a router is setup as an extender to extend the range of an existing router. So 2 routers are usually involved. For example you have a wifi router in the house and a laptop connects great in the house, but out in the garage...the signal is weak and keeps dropping the connection. In these cases some routers can be set to work as extenders of repeaters, the signal from the house router is extended to the router in the garage (set up as an extender) and you set it to use the same wifi security codes. If that explanation helps. If you are not trying to extend an existing router you will probably not set it up as "extended".
