How does Boot from Network Work

my laptop does not have a fdd or cdrom, it has the ability to boot from network is there a way I can configure it so that it installs from another machine???
what kinds of software would I need and how would I go about it ???

does it have a USB port? if the bios supports it, you can boot from a USB floppy or cdrom.

it does but ideally I want to be able to install a copy of either linux/windoes on it without having to shell out any more money on it

Do some research on BOOTP and Remote Booting. Essentially your Network Boot ROM sends out a signal, that it wants a boot image. The server sends the image which is loaded in memory and system then BOOTS. You have to have server with images installed.
For your purpose all you need is probably the equivalent of a boot floppy since you want to install the software locally. You will need the appropriate server either Linux or something like Windows NT4 Enterprise Edition.
I think it would be faster to remove the hard drive and copy the operating system(s) to it.
