How does a Proxy Server stop working?

Specs: Windows XP
And how can it be fixed?

My main connection line is to my parents computer and about a month ago a weird little notice came up on my computer saying something about a proxy, well being a teenager and wanting to just get on with what i was doing i just 'X' it out and continued, and there was no problems with my internet for a couple hours then suddenly all my internet windows that i had up just disappeared on me, so i figured that i had worn my computer out for the night and shut it all down for the night, the next day, as i was trying to get online it wouldnt connect and the page just kept saying "The proxy Server is refusing connections"
We've tried several things but nothing has worked... Anyone have any idea's on what is wrong because im out of them, and im sick of it not working. help??

You are probably not using a proxy, but a router. A virus may have put a check mark in your browser, with a proxy servers address. If you can open Internet explorer, click the tools menu, then internet options, then the connections tab; at the bottom of the connections tab, there is a box "lan settings" click on the box and simply remove the check mark from the "use proxy server........", normally, nothing should be checked off under the "lan settings tab" . Firefox, it's under tools, then options, then advanced tab, then network tab, settings....again make sure you are not using a proxy setting. Finally...close and re open your browser and test the internet. If it malwarbytes and run a scan....something has put in a proxy. or changed the tcp/ip settings....try the browsers first.
