I have a canon notejet 3 which is currently running windows 3.1. I wish to network it with my ibm. I have a pcmcia networking card for my laptop and a networking card for my computer. My Ibm is running windows xp. I also have the cable to join up the computers. I don't know how to set up a network. My Canon Notejet 3 has no cd rom so i wish to hook it up to my Ibm so i can use the Ibms cdrom on my Notebook. Also i want to transfer files between them. I don't know how to set up an network on xp and need help.
Any information or instructions on setting up a network would be greatly appreciated.

It is very simple. Get yourself a networkk hub. If you have three computers, then a four port hub is adequate. You can actually buy a kit that would have the hub, network cards and cables.
Just follow the instructions about installing the cards.
Your laptop and XP should pick the network up very easily, but you might have to configure the win3.x yourself. Upgrade it to win9x and you will be up and running in no time.
Actually it is not simple to explain in detail what to do, but to set up a home network is one of the simplest thing s one can do. Follow the instructions about the network cards and the hub and you will have it in no time. Good luck.

Hey BMC,

I'm pretty sure Win 3.1 itself isn't network capable. From what I've read while surfing the net you'd probably have to install the latest version of a browser, either Netscape or IE, if they will install at all. Even then it probably won't be easy. You might need to install Win 95 on the Notejet, if there is room on the drive.

Please post back with your results.

Reading the messages, I see that one thing I learned is not mentioned: I was unable to network 2 pcs with Win 95 and 98, until I upgraded the 95 pc to run 98.
I don't think anything will say it in Windows' instructions but 3.1 won't be compatible with anything higher, I believe.

Good luck

For MFL,

If you had problems connecting the two PC's until you upgraded 95 to 98 you must have been missing critical files from the Win95 PC. I have one of each here and they are networked just fine and both can access the internet.
