how do I set up a home network using ethernet

Specs: Windows 7 starter and Vista, 1Go for netbook, 2 Go for the other
I realise this is a particularly dumb question, but I can't seem to make anything work on my own and I don't much fancy transferring 60Go using two 4Go usb sticks...

so, I have an Acer Aspire netbook with Windows 7 starter, a normal - if oldish - Toshiba satellite laptop working under Vista and an ethernet cable. How do I set up a network between them using an ethernet cable so that I can transfer files from one to the other ? (alternatively, I set up a wireless password-protected network between the two, but can't see the other computer when I get into the 'network' directory. The blighter does however appear in the network map, just to spite me. Any ideas about what I did wrong ?)

thanks in advance

Windows 7 / Vista Ad-hoc Wireless Network

You need a Xover (crossover) Cable for connecting two PC/Laptops
