Hello all

QUESTION
Currently these networks are 100% separate but i want to share the DSL Modem between the 2 networks...

INFORMATION
Network # 1
DSL Modem
Linksys Router <-- using the Tomato Firmware
Windows 2K3 Server and 10 WinXP Pro clients

Network #2
NO DSL Modem
Linksys Router <-- using the Tomato Firmware
Windows 2K3 Server and 10 WinXP Pro clients

The only way i can join the 2 networks together is wirelessly
I DO NOT care if i have to buy a 3rd Linksys Router

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
I have been researching on the best way in which to share the internet across both networks without the 2 networks being able to see each other and these are my results

1) Some recommended using different ip's

2) Some recommended using different subnets

3) Some recommended using a switch between the the DSL Modem and the Routers

4) Some recommended DSL --> Router --> 2 Different Switches and i have to "BREAK" the ports or something about vlans etc.....

So what do you guys think?
Thanks in Advance
Eddie

I would go for 2 different subnets if the router can handle it.

hi:
it can be done quite easily,

step 1: first linksys router give an ip address 192.168.1.1

step 2:second linksys router ip can be changed to 192..168.2.1; and do lan to wan cascading with the help of the cable i.e (cable from one of the lan port of first router to wan port of the second router):

Thanks and Regards

Unless you have the money for a managed switch, forget the VLAN's. While that's good advice, it's also expensive.

Unless there's a very specific need, I wouldn't separate them into two networks. A single netwwork simplifies things.

If you feel you must separate them, do so using subnets.

you can buy any switch on ebay, cheap - buy a Cisco switch that supports IOS, not cat OS - they are cheap cheap... or buy a netgear switch, all switches support VLANS.. check the spec's before buying. it's cool and it's the best to break-up two networks the right way.

I would second l8ians post, that is the cheapest and simplist way to do what you want and will work very well with the equipment you have. It is free to do without adding anything and you can then move to the more complex and expensive solutions if it doesn't perform like you need.

I don't think we have a clear picture here.

Since Cytomax is running the Tomato firmware, I have to assume its being done for WDS.

"The only way i can join the 2 networks together is wirelessly" confirms this.

With WDS you have one network and one subnet.

Addressing the possible solutions based on this information:

1) Some recommended using different ip's
answer: can't be done with this setup

2) Some recommended using different subnets
answer: same as #1

3) Some recommended using a switch between the the DSL Modem and the Routers
answer: same as #1

4) Some recommended DSL --> Router --> 2 Different Switches and i have to "BREAK" the ports or something about vlans etc.....
answer: same as #1

The SOLUTION you do have is to use the Windows or other software firewall.

First step is configure static ips
Network1 is 192.168.0.2-12 [11 hosts= 1 serv and 10 wksts]
Network2 is 192.168.0.100-112 [again 11 hosts].

On all hosts of network1 you set the firewalls to deny network2's ip address range
On all hosts of network2 you set the firewalls to deny network1's ip address range

The formentioned solutions above would work with a wired network but not a wireless WDS network.

Now if you were NOT using wds, and you were only using the 2nd router as a access point [lan to lan port connection not wan to lan] the best solution is two vlans. Two different subnets would not work in this situation since there is a common gateway.

If you cascaded router2 from router1 [lan on router1 to wan on router2] you could have two different subnets. But this also usually means those connected to router2 can see/access router1's hosts since their router knows about that subnet to get to the internet.

This is what i think i am going to be doing now....its a hybrid of the vlans idea and the switch idea
Tell me if you think this will work?
