Subject: How do I replicate DHCP and DNS (W2K\AD) |
Comment: Whilst were on the subject of DHCP and DNS. Would anybody happend to know how to get it to replicate from one server to another? We have a AD (Active Directory) network with a Operations Master (W2K Server) (PDC, can you hear the MS people cursing me) and a BDC (W2k Server)(there they go again). When the PDC goes down the BDC will take over a replicate the users and distribute the rights. They only thing I'm conserned about is that it does not have DHCP and DNS on it so how will they work is the PDC goes down? If they can be replicated across, does anybody know how this is done, and if it can, can it be set to replicate on a schedule so that it has an up to date copy. Any assistance will be much appreciated. Thx. Leigh.

Reply: (edit)PDC / BDC ?? I'm one of those Microsoft people you mention. As you seem to know by your post, there is no PDC / BDC. A DC is a DC. Granted you have the PDC emulator but that is not important for this. The replication of DNS depends on how you have DNS set up. If your DNS zone is AD Integrated, then the DNS information will replicate automatically. THe schedule depends on your setup with sites an subnets. If you have DNS set up as a Primary - Secondary, then you control replication that way. DHCP does not replicate. You could configure a scope on each to hand out addresses in the same range, yet with different IPs in it. This is a bit difficult to explain here. Again it depends if you have multiple subnets or not.
