The most common method would use a Cat5e cable to connect the router 'internet' port to the cable modem network port. If everything is set to the typical or factory default settings, you'll be able to have multiple devices connected to your router's LAN ports that have access to the internet. (Refer to your router setup guide for a typical setup.) One of those devices attached to your router could be a switch. There are a number of different switch configurations to consider, so you'll need to say what switch you're planning to use and how.

Cable Modem >> (WAN port) Router (LAN port) >> Switch >> clients

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
