Comment: I was at a friends place last night trying to help him set up his internet connection. The problem that kept arising was to do with the Point to Point to Protocol. It always came up with the error saying it was diconnected. We used the set up cd that came with the ADSL modem. A filter was also placed on the phone line. The operating system is XP pro SP2 (a clean install) All the username and passwords relevent were entered. What could possibly be causing this problem? Thanks for any help :)

Reply: (edit)PPP (Point to Point Protocol) is the protocol that is used to communicate with your ISP. It provides the log on and user verification when you first connect. Depending where in the world you are it will be either PPPoEthernet or PPPoATM. You must have this set correctly although most ADSL modems will work it out for themselves. Make sure that the ADSL synchronisation light is lit and not flashing. Until the modem is synchronised with the ADSL equipment at the other end of your telephone line, nothing will happen. If everything checks out, the only thing you can do is contact your ISP. Could be the problem is at their end. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Hey there. Thanks for replying. The ADSL modem has two lights and they were lit (not flashing) all the time. Both the phone and the ADSL modem were connected to the filter and then the filter was put into the phone socket on the wall. My friend phoned the ISP but it is not the world's best help centre and the guy just told him to take his computer to a repair shop without explaining why he should do that. Someone said it might be the actual installation cd that is faulty although that would be an extreme becuase it seems to install the software properly. In the digagnostics part of the cd set up it has an option to do a test of the system and it just keeps stopping at the ISP part saying it's PPP disconnected. I don't know anywhere on the operating system that I could check to see why this is? I thought it might be the cables or the filter but there was a spare filter and I swapped that over with no effect. The usb cable must also be ok because the OS recognises the new hardware. I know I should maybe read into what exactly PPP is and how it is supposed to function but I imagine that would take a lengthy amount of time to understand fully. It's just that most modern day modem installations are self installing and all one would have to enter is one's details. I don't see it being a hardware problem but then again I'm not an expert. The computer works fine in every other way.

Reply: (edit)The Driver CD should also install the USER/PASS Login software applicable to the modem, if you use that there is no requirement to setup anything else in Windows. The driver software will configure the Modem Protocol, that is providing the Modem has been installed correctly.
