I have a customer who needs me to network win95 and xp via a crossover or hub, due to the license cost he cant afford to buy an upgrade license to win98, ive tried tcp/ip and setup up the usernames and workgroup etc.., i have had no luck, is there a way.
I tried it with netbuei and the 2 machine saw each other on each machine but i couldnt access any resorces from either one, and the netbuei protocol seems buggy. Any suggestions!!
=====================================

It's not NetBEUI that's buggy...it's XP...oh wait, those are features! Anyhow, I don't like how XP networks...I find it a lot more trouble than it should be considering how well the networking in 2000 works. Anyhow, all you should have to do is stick a NIC in both machines (make sure both are working properly), plug the crossover cable in and then add NetBEUI.
You can use TCP/IP and I would myself, but you don't have to in this situation. If you do decide to use TCP/IP, the configuration should be as follows:
Computer A:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0Computer B:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0You have to have a user account on the XP machine for the 9x computer. It should use the exact same username/password combination used to log onto the 9x machine. If you can't access the remote PC via the network neighbourhood try mapping directly using:
\\computername\share

Yes i have the exact same problem .. its driving me nuts i have dns set up fine and the gateway and a the whole shebang
yet to no avail .. they talk to each other using the config software that came on the disk with it .. however tcpip refuses to talk .. its not the network cause every one else is happy and its not the card its plain old software .. ugh.

I have just set up a network with WIN 95 on one computer and Win XP on the other with a 4 port router.
Everything is working fine except I am still working on getting all of the features of MSN Messenger to work.
You should be able to set up a network with eith a hub or router.
