I wonder if you can find a router that has a usb or pcmcia wan interface.

mobi google either the words proxy server, internet connection sharing or analogx proxy. You have choices between microsoft's ICS [internet connection sharing] or for example analogx proxy server.

Both can be setup to provide internet to other attached pcs.

Typically you would use a server operating system (OS) like Windows 2003 Small Business Server. But, whether or not you need that OS (or another server OS) depends on what you want to do with the server.

For instance, if you buy a wireless SOHO router, you could do DHCP from the router so wouldn't need to run that as a service on your server.

Explain what you wish to use the server for so we can better answer what server OS you need (if any - XP Pro may do the job for you)

So far, I mentioned a router & Curt mentioned a router. Networks use routers. Why don't you want to buy a router?

I answered your question. You clearly have not followed up on googling Internet Connection Sharing or Analogx proxy server.

Do so and then come back with different questions.

Is this what you have...

If so then No. You could setup an AD HOC network through your Laptops WiFi but it would be so slow that it would be worthless.

Never mind I think this is what you have....

Then yes you have to do an AD HOC network.

Good luck with that. These devices are not designed for this. 3G sucks for high speed. You need to get a landline ISP like DSL or Cable.

Am I missing something? Is there a difference between a USB wireless dongle & a USB wireless adapter? They connect to wireless routers.

Yes, because it is not a WiFi adapter but a Cell Phone Dongle that links into a 3G Network.

Mobi stated twice what he has for broadband connection. That's why I said it would be hard to find a router with a usb wan interface or one with a pcmcia wan interface.

This is similar to what ClearWire does in my neck of the woods.
