I'd recommend getting a router because using ICS to run a PS2 is a real pain. If you have a firewall up you have to do port-forwarding which can be a real pain.

To do it with ICS first run the ICS wizard to set up the LAN. If you're using the XP firewall set it to recognize that the PC is a host PC on an ICS network, for other firewall products set these to recognize IP range 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.255.255 as "local" or "trusted". If you only have one ethernet card on your PC this should automatically receive an IP address of 192.168.0.2 on start up or you can assign an address in the 192.168.0.xxx range to it. Usually safer to set the IP address.

The PS2 adapter came with a setup disc. Insert this in the PS2 and fire it up. Follow the on-screen instructions and enter the gateway address as that of your ethernet adapter and set a fixed IP address for the PS2 adapter, usually something like 192.168.0.25. The 3rd octal ("0" in this case) has to be the same as that of the gateway IP address. If your gateway address were 192.168.1.2 then your PS's IP address would have to be 192.168.1.25, whatever. In point of fact make it something that nothing else on your network is likely to assign by mistake to another device. IP addresses are assigned in numerical order so unless you have 25 other clients the IP address I suggested should be safe.

To connect to a remote game under ICS you have to find the port numbers used by that game (read the manual) and port forward all traffic to the PS2's IP address for these - which is why you set an IP address for it, otherwise the address could change each time you powered up the game box and that would be a nightmare to configure.

As I mentioned above you're better off using a router because these have what's called a DMZ setting, Demiliterized Zone. That means for the IP Address(es) you input, all traffic between the Internet and the client is unfiltered, on all ports. Dirrerent games and game servers use different ports so with ICS you'd have to port-forward these individually which can be a pain. Normally putting a client in the DMZ is considered a security threat because anyone on the Internet can access and possibly hack the client but with a PS2 it doesn't matter: it doesn't have a hard drive so it can't be infected with a worm or virus and all it can do is run games and from the DMZ it can't pass infections to your PC anyway.

For total mobility pick up a Wireless Gaming Adapter. Connect that to your PS2's ethernet adapter and you can roam from room to room or house to house with your PS2; anywhere there's a wireless network available. With your configuration you'd need another WGA to connect to your PC's ethernet adaptor or to pick up a wireless adapter to replace it. Or you could get a wireless router. You wouldn't be tied to your PC with a cable.
