I'm hooking up two computers with a router. Both can access the internet just fine but I can't get them to connect to each other. I've been messing with settings and reading for a while now and still no luck.
Both computers are running XP. I've made a folder to share from and on comp#2 It shows both computers being in the network but I can't access comp#1. Comp#1 doesn't show either computer and I get an error saying something about the configuration of the TCI/IP.
If you need more info let me know. Thanks!

Have you turned off the firewalls on both computers?

Yes. Like go START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>FIREWALL. They are off on both computers. Both computers have different IPs and default gateways and they have the same Subnet mask. Do I have to set up a password and user name or what? I'm a little confused as this is my first time and I don't know everything I should about computers yet.
I'm lost as to what else to even try at this point. Thanks.

On Comp#2 I ran a network diagnostics and it says that Linksys nc100 fast ethernet FAILED. When I scroll down a little it says the IP address and says (FAILED) beside of it. What exactly does this mean?

Also, on Comp#1 under network connections it show I have two connections. One is a local area network from Time Warner Cable and the other is a 1394 Connection. On Comp#2 it only has a local area connection.
I should be trying to network these two computers under the same LAN connection, right? What is the 1394 connection?

I have internet on both computers I'm just still having trouble connecting them together on their own network for file sharing.

Thanks again.

Hmmm Have a look here for an explanation of your 1394 connection

The 2 machines must be on the same network

I'd start afresh and create 2 identical new users with same passwords on both machines. Then run network wizard and disable firewalls again on both machines

What user names and passwords? I've read nothing about this. How would I go about doing that?

Here is another post of mine at a different forum: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=200828
It might fill in some gaps. Who knows.

I think I'm just trying to set up a workgroup, right? I even checked out a book at the library for help(yea, I've actually been reading it). And to the best of my knowledge I've been doing exactly what windows has been telling me to do. I've been stuck at this point for a few days now.

But yea, How do I set up user names and passwords?

Could my trouble have anything to do with my router not being configured right? How would I check? I think most of my problem is me being an idiot but I still need to get this fixed.

Thanks for replying.

Question: do you have Norton Internet Security installed? IF so, you must tell NIS that the block of IPs on your side of the router are "trusted addresses". Worked for me.
