Hello, I am interested in setting up a network at home to share files and a printer between my desktop PC and my MacBook Pro,
at the moment i have my PC connected via ethernet to a wireless broadband router, and the macbook connected to the router via AirPort,
can i use the router to create the network? if not i also have a Netgear switch laying about, would that help?

Above you said, "and the macbook connected to the router via AirPort. Is it able to get internet connectivity?
If yes, then your PC and Mac should be able to communicate. To test, open a terminal window on the macbook and a command prompt window on the desktop PC.
On the PC type: ipconfig /all to see your TCP/IP settings. To view those on your Mac you will probably have to use the following command: ifconfig (if it's using OSX)
If your IP's are within the same subnet, then the unit's should be able to communicate. You can test by pinging each other. By that I mean, ping the PC from the Mac and vice versa.
