OK. I have a previous post where I asked for some help. I decided that the easiest way to fix my issue was to replace my 2 router + wireless access point network, with a single router that has wireless included that I had back home.

This single router is a Microsoft MN-500. The only issue is, I also have a hub. This hub is a 3Com OfficeConnect (I can get the exact model number if it's needed). Anyways, the hub connects 6 rooms into the router. I thought that if I just switch the port that use to connect to the D-Link router over to my Microsoft router all should be good.

So I did it, but when I connect it to Port 1 of the Microsoft router, the Port 1 light remains off. It doesn't even flicker. Trying to release and renew my computers IP gives me some nonsense "autoconfiguration IP" and no access to anything.

Could it be the Ethernet wire? I know there are many different types out there. Perhaps the D-Link DI-604 is expecting one type, and the Microsoft one is expecting another? Or am I just being silly.

I'm a student of Computer Science, although I've never gotten into networking yet, but point me in the right direction and I'll read any material you can offer.

Thanks alot,

Sounds like the D-Link router had auto MDI/MDIX support and the Microsoft router does not. You will most likely need a crossover Ethernet cable as opposed to a straight through (the one you are currently trying to use).

Computer Science is a great course of study. I hold a BS in CIS, Cum Laude, from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Thanks!

There is an MDI X button near the port on the D-Link router. I'll go out and get a crossover tomorrow.

Thanks again Smitty,
