My current setup:
dell dimension 8200 xp home sp2 and dell inspiron e1505 laptop xp media edition sp2.
fiber optic high speed internet via at&t uverse.
2 routers (at&t 2wire and vonage linksys)zone alarm firewall on both.
I ran the network setup wizard on both PC's using the same workgroup name. I enabled file and printer sharing and have folders that are shared. I enabled zone alarm firewall trusted zones for my network. Cannot see files or folders or printers.
I had this my PC's networked sucessfully in the past. I recently switched to ATT and I had uninstalled zone alarm and AVG and installed Norton that is free with my service. I thought norton might be the issue so I removed norton and put back zone alarm. Still no luck. I am wondering if I have to configure the new att router in some way?? I am stuck! Thanks.
Darren
Thanks for your time.

router has nothing to do with the lan side of your network per say. Any firewall you install has to be configured to trust your subnet or other pc.
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Let's do some basic things first...
1. Check the workgroup in both computers...is it the same???2. Check the IP address...start > run > ipconfig /all > are the 2 IP addresses in the same subnet???
3. Do you have matching accounts on each computer...example, does computer 1 have an account named Fred and the 2ed computer also have an accound named Fred...
Set the pw on both machines the same...4. You say you have a 2Wire modem/router...what model is it...??? a 2601 or other???
5. Remove your Vonage equipment completely in case it is "confusing" things...iot should not BUT...keep it as simple as possible until you get it working, then add on the other stuff...
6. Thur Windows firewall off on both computers...
7. Turn off or disable any other firewalls you have...
8. Can you ping each others IP address???
9. Now go into My Network Places...drill down and do you see your computers???
Report back...

Did you switch to ATT Call Vantage - or to Vonage. If call vantage and you get the Dlink DVG-1120M VOIP Router, you have the option of setting it up behind the router. This is very handy as the Dlink router, like most VOIP routers, will squeeze off your data throughput when on an active telephone call. At any rate, try getting the PC's and VOIP all up and running, and then work on the peer-to-peer sharing problem. Best bet is to disable all firewalls on the PC's. You can always disconnect the router from the modem while you work on the p2p sharing issue, to prevent being seen from the internet, but it's not completely necessary as the router is providing you protection via nat. I'll bet you have a firewall issue. We have a saying, once norton always norton.

Thanks for trying to help. Here is some more info: I uninstalled zone alarm and shut off windows firewalls on both laptop and desktop.
I have been deleting my newtwork icons in network places and tried over and over with different network setup names and computer descriptions thinking it might work by starting over. No luck.
Yes my workgroup names are the same. My at&t 2wire router is model 3800HGV-B Gateway
my log on user name and passwords are the same.
Before switching to att i had a perfectly working home network that I set up myself with no problems.
I am not sure if it is the new router or installing norton that messed things up. I have no firewalls and cannot see shared network folders or printers from either pc.
I am not sure about the ip addresses. I pulled up ipconfig/all but did not follow what steven5000 meant by 2ip addresses.
I unplugged vonage router but no luck.
When running the network setup wizard on the Desktop which is connected to the router, the first choice asks if the pc is connected directly to the internet. If I choose tghat one I get an error message "cannot complete..change settings try again or do manually" I thought that would be the one to use but does not work so I have used the second choice "connects through residential gateway" but this is not working. My ideal situation would be to get network working with norton or zonealarm, but right now it's not working with any. Thanks for reading and trying to help.
Frustratedly yours,
Darren
