I have done everything possible to fix this and it will not work. I tried unistalling the adapter, file printer sharing. I cant get my laptop to file or print share with my desktop. However the internet connection shares fine. I go to my network places on my desktop and i can see both computers however, i cannot access the laptop. The laptop will not even bring up itself when i click on workgroups.

I am sure they are set under the same workgroup and have different names.

The only thing is when i run the network troubleshooter the laptop fails under network adapters under the ipaddress part.

any suggestions? please i thank you in advance

Nick

turn off your software firewalls on both starting with the laptop as a test to see if they are blocking access. You may need to reboot after disabling.

If you then gain access and by reengaging the firewalls are blocked you just have to properly configure the firewalls.

Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

What exactly is the error when it fails setting an ip? Since you reinstalled the nic driver, check it's tcpip properties and see if it is being assigned an ip address and dns address automatically.

Your ipconfig seems fine so the problem doesn't seem to be there. Try going to control panel>network & internet connections and run the network setup wizard. Are you using a wireless router to network the desktop and laptop?

yes i have already used the network setup wizard and everything is set up just as i have always done it before and things work properly.

Yes I am using a netgear wireless router.

Let me explain... I installed a new hardrive on the laptop and installed windows xp and started hooking everything up and set the network up and it worked fine and i was able to file printer share....then the next day i went to print something from the laptop and it did not work. So i then looked at the network and noticed i could not access the desktop from the laptop and vice versa however, the internet connection that is put out by the router works on both computers.

Maybe I should reset the router?

Thanks for all your help!

Yes, reset the router by powering it off for about 30 seconds, reboot both pc's and make sure your not connecting to your neighbors network by accident.
