Comment: Ok so monday i am finally going to get high speed internet. I am going to get cable, from road runner. I also have 2 computers, but i rather buy the hardware and connect it myself then pay the montly fees they charge. I was thinking that i would buy the Lynksys Wireless 802.11G Broadband Router (WRT54G) to the cable modem, and then connect one computer to the routers hub and another 1 will be wireless. Will this setup work? What about security, what can i do about it? Thanks in advance, Carlos

Reply: (edit)This will prevent incoming unsolicited attacks out. However, you still should run software firewalls on each machine (the one with XP works), run current anti-virus software on both, scan regularly, keep your systems patched to current, and most importantly, make sure you setup WPA encryption for the wireless client. Make sure your wireless client NIC and the router you are buying both support WPA. WEP is not secure anymore. "Pat Buchanan, Bob Novak, and G. Gordon Liddy don't like Mark Felt. Reply: (edit)But will this set up work? and how exacly will i set it up. I have read in various posts here that using a router will make the connection slower. For example, that before they had the computer direcly connected to the cable modem, and when they put it through the router it slowed down. How can i prevent this? Thanks

Reply: (edit)It's slower because you're dividing bandwidth between multiple machines. Other than that, their routers must have been malfunctioning. You should be good to go. "Pat Buchanan, Bob Novak, and G. Gordon Liddy don't like Mark Felt. Mark Felt is truly a great man."
