I have two home Dell desktops with a newly purchased Linksys BEFSR41 v.3 wired router with ADSL intneret access. Both computers are running Windows XP (with all updates installed). I had internet access for both computers up and running within an hour of hooking up the router. The home networking bit is a bit tricky and I have no idea what I did wrong. I ran the home networking wizard on Windows XP no less than 10 times on each computer. The result is the same, the network is suppose to be setted up but neither computer can see each other. I have tried to manually configure the network, same result. When I double click on "Other computer in the Workgroup", I get a lengthy delay and an error message saying that I cannot access the workgroup. I have disabled both the XP firewall and the Norton Internet Security just in case the firewalls are causing the problem. I must be missing something but what?

Are the computers in the same workgroup. Do not use the default of MSHOME as it has known problems.
Does each computer have an account on the other computer? They need one on each others computer.
Let's start with these things.
Larry

On each computer, click Run, then Start, then type "cmd". When the window comes up type "ipconfig", and let us know what each one says.
Then from one computer try running "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" with the other computer's IP address instead of the x's (still in the "cmd" window), and let us know what the result is.

I have the same problem... however, the machines really can see each other just fine, but for some reason, you can't go through "My Network Places" etc... When I try that, I get the same result tumster described. However, if I just type in \\computername in the address bar of windows explorer, I get instant access... strange, eh? Tumster you sould try the same thing and see if this works for you as well. My guess is that Windows is looking for a domain controller for the workgroup and not finding one. This type of networking is kind of a hack? I dunno, I can only speculate. And yes, any firewall software, including the built in XP thing WILL interfere so you did the right thing turning those off. I would appreciate any info on making this type of networking work better. Thanks

Last night I found this article...

You'll notice that the second question sounds alot like our problem. Long story short, you might try enabeling NetBIOS over TCP/IP. It didn't work for me though :(
