Hi!

I just upgraded to XP Home on my 2nd computer, and on my 1st im running Xp Pro!
I got a Cat5 cable and would like to connect the 2 computer for File/Printsharing.. also internet. Both of them got a Nic each and the XP pro got one extra for the interent connection.

XP pro = main computer with the internet connection (internet works fine)

XP Home wants to connect to XP Pro and get out on the internet.

I've tried Ping, and it works both ways. I know that im really close, because sometimes I can access the XPHome from my XPPro, starnge!?

I gave them static IP's (192.168.0.1 -2)
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.0.1! I missed something for sure, so if you got any suggestions pls help me out...

thanks

I have had the same problem for weeks with (2) W2K pro systems, I have adsl on 1 (server) with WinPoet as the dialer. I am convinced Windows 2K has a glitch in there shareing the DHCP. On the client box, I can get e-mail and ping any site in the world, but the browser was always having trouble finding just certain pages, not Microsoft....lol.

I thought maybe it was my upgrade from Windows ME, but not the case. Its Microsoft.

But try this,
Try making a entry in the properties section of each TCP/IP properties under "default Gateway" as 0.0.0.0 with a "metric" of 1.

Now, it didn't work for mine but my friends it did, again only if you are useing dsl or cable with a 3rd party dialer or it may work with dial up also.Try it first.

The client can be any ip address, the server must be 192.168.0.1, submask of 255.255.255.0

I ended up in frustration and downloaded a program called "Sygate home network 4.2" from www.sygate.com, and in less than 3 minutes I had the other machine online. Install it on both machines, 1 as a client 1 as a server. and booom your up and running.

Its a free download for 30 days and only 39.00 for 3 computer setup. Seriously, save some trouble and go get this software. It saved me weeks of problems in minutes.

Is this a peer to peer connection? If it is, you need a cross over Cat 5 cable and not a straight thru. The computer connecting to the internet has to be set as the "1" computer, i.e. 192.168.0.1, and the second computer has to be set as the "2" computer, 192.168.0.2. Be sure to manually assign the IP address'es. Submask of 255.255.255.0. Make sure internet connection is activated. If it is intermittent, I would suspect a bad connector on the cable. Try using a different cable (straight thru for hub, crossover for peer to peer).
