Hello everyone! Here is my case:

I have 4 computers networked together in my house sharing a single 4.5Mbps Cable line. My cousin lives with me and she is always downloading files on the internet and that really slows down the internet for the 3 other computers. Now my question is - is it possible to limit her download and upload speed so it doesn't slow down the internet alot? I know if I limit the internet she wouldn't know that I've done it because her computer knowledge is basically nothing.

You need to learn to treat your family better. Consider an system that involves love and trust and understanding and fairness.

Jefro,

"You need to learn to treat your family better." Samguan didn't mention anything about beating the family members.

Could you kindly rephase that information to a working solution?

eg. explaining to the cousin that she needs to act more fairly and get rid of the BitTorent whereas others are using the bandwidth that should be utilized by the other house members.

yeh,everything the previous guys said....

BUT, consider that if your cousin knows "nothing" , then your high speed line is probably being trashed by malicious activity on your network being back-doored through your cousin's computer. Be the smart one here and clean up and filter all computers.
Run a speed test on your computers and your realize that now is probably a good time to reformat your hardrives and get rid of the 30-40 virues and 50-100 spyware running on your pc(s). Then you'll be able to enjoy your ISp again. Good luck.

No, there are no settings on a consumer grade router that will do what you want. You need a business class router or proxy server. In your case, the proxy server software would be what you want, since I doubt that you'll want to buy a business class router. I'm not familiar enough with them to be able to make a recommendation, but do a google search for proxy server software.

Your best option/approach should be to follow the earlier advise and TALK to you cousin to work out a schedule when she can do her downloading.

There are applications you can run on her computer to limit her bandwidth. I've never used them so I don't know how "obvious" it would be or if there is a way to make it hidden.

One that comes to mind is "net limiter"

You don't need to buy anything extra. You can flash your firmware to the Sveasoft firmware. This custom firmware has built in functionality for bandwidth management.

Fed up with Windows? Try Ubuntu Linux

I didn't have a problem with the bandwidth. I was stumped with the request for a way to do things behind a family member's back.

I agree the true numbers involved are not known to us or most likely the poster. I am not sure that I even agree that a torrent user would actually download more bits per second than any other user. The post almost suggests that the cousin somehow gets 100mbs while the others get 20mbs.

I would say that a set of tests that include spyware removal and widgets and any other network use would be a start. Then they need to decide if there is still a weakness in their network. It might be that they are using a HUB and when the traffic goes above 40% it causes collisions to a point of no return. In fact I suspect that is the true cause if the weak link.

I still have to stand by my statement. Your family is way way way more important to you than a crummy download, car or well, almost anything else in life.
