Hello all, this problem has been plauging me since forever, how in the world do you get the TCP/IP connection to work between two networked computers? Is it possible to do it, if so what are the settings, I installed the protocol in the connections properties but it has all this stuff that is beyond my knowledge. I was wondering because I have a game that I made along with a friend and it requires a TCP/IP connection between the two computers, it asks for the IP, I put it in and boom, nothing happens. Any help would be nice.

Thanks,
The Odd Ball

Are you connecting the two PC's via a cat5 crossover cable or a cat5 regular straight thru cable?

To connect two like devices you need a crossover cable.

You'll know it if you have one because they are clearly marked.

two useful commands

open your command prompt and type

ipconfig

note at the ip address and subnet mask (the subnet masks should match).

then type

ping <IP address of other computer>

and, if connected properly, you will see a response.

Give me more info and I can tell you more

Firstly, I am using a belkin Cat5 patch cable and I don't know if it is a crossover cable, it has that no where on the cord. The two computers are connected via router, and I am able to set up a home network that has file sharing. Secondly I tried to ping the other comps IP addy and all I got was "The Syntax Of The Command Is Incorrect". Also the Subnet Masks are the same, so that is good. Anymore suggestions and could you tell me how to check if it is a crossover cable?

Just checked the command and I got it right this time, the two of them are connected and I sent 4 packs and got back 4, so it is all good. Sorry for the double post.

if you can ping ok then it is most likely the game or a firewall that is the problem, your network sounds fine. To check if it is the game, download a demo of Quake 3 or something and test that.
