hi peter:
i had a similar problem where i only had one modem and had to have it one room, but wanted my computer in another! what i did was buy a linksys wireless access point router and a linksys wireless adapter with a usb connection. then, you connect your cable to your cable modem as usual, and your modem, instead of to your computer, to the router. then follow the installation/setup instructions of the adapter on your pc once you've moved it to the other room. it's usually very easy and quick to set up--the wireless adapter will usually immediately get the signal from the router. of course, you'll want to get information on making it a secure network, which i used to think i could help with, but right now i've got my own question on the board because i seem to have screwed up security in mine. :)
